Bruach na Mara Service, Carraroe is located in South Connemara in the heart of the Gaeltacht in an Irish speaking area.

Bruach na Mara’s vision is that of a high standard of service delivery based on a person-centred service which focuses on supporting individuals to achieve their personal outcomes with an emphasis placed on each individual adult’s rights. Each individual is supported through the decision making process towards achieving their goals in education, health, leisure, work, and suitable housing.  Participation in the local rural community in the Gaeltacht area is of vital importance as Gaeilge/Irish is the primary language spoken.

We have 5 Residential Houses with integrated day programmes.  These programmes provide an opportunity for individuals or a small group of individuals to avail of the community in their daily lifestyle activities. The houses are managed by Team Leaders and staffed with either or both nursing and social care staff depending on the needs of the individuals residing there.

Each individual in receipt of Disability Allowance, Blind Pension or similar payment will contribute a specified amount towards accommodation and daily expenses of the household, e.g. Utility Bills, food and on-going maintenance.

Bruach na Mara Residential Services are Designated Centres under HIQA regulations. These are Seirbhís Radharc an Chláir, Seirbhís na Beanna Beola agus Seirbhís Radharc Árainn.  For more information on each service, please contact the Team Leader to view the Statement of Purpose or to request to view a copy of inspection reports.  Please click on the link below for more information on HIQA.

Bruach na Mara Services have 4 resource centres:

Durling Rehabilitation Training Programme:

This programme, for participants aged 18 years and over, is designed to meet the needs of each individual participant with the view to developing their social, sporting, vocational, work and independent living skills.

Ionad Cois Cladaigh:

Activities in the resource centre include: pottery, art, patchwork/quilting, knitting, drama, music, creative writing, woodwork, cookery, leisure activities, health and wellbeing, hill walking, advocacy, and sports. Educational needs are supported by teachers from Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) in literacy, writing, computers, cookery and horticulture.

Cois Cuain Day Centre and Carna Hub:

These are very active and energetic community based programmes. The services provide supports for individuals with severe to profound learning disabilities and their families. The day is filled with many activities such as art, massage, sensory based programmes including Tac Pac, intensive interaction programmes, gardening, tabletop, baking, yoga and music. Individuals visit the local markets in the community for their shopping needs. Our programme is run from a community based model and, as such, a lot of our activities occur in the community such as swimming, bowling, shopping, cinema, reflexology, beauty therapy and the library.

The programmes are situated in the villages of Carraroe and Carna, which gives all individuals an opportunity to access local facilities like the post office, bank, library and doctors without having to use the transport vehicles.

Some of the programmes provided are grant funded by the following schemes; Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board, Galway County Arts Council, Tus-Community Work Placement Scheme and Community Employment Schemes, the last two of which are ran by the Department of Social Protection.  Huge focus is based on maintaining the great connections and networking made with local TG4, Radio Na Gaeltachta and the community at large.  Volunteers are a very important additional support for individuals.
