Southern Services - Social Work In Adult Day Services

The Social Work input to adult service users is assigned/delivered on the basis of their Day Services. Presently there are six specific Day Service options:-

  • Tara Day Service
  • Castle View Day Service
  • Hillcrest Day Service
  • The Brook Centre
  • Caritas Day Service
  • Supported / Open Employment Service

    In fulfilling the Social Work Role in Adult Services various professional roles are adopted by the Social Worker. These roles are very much grounded in the Mission Statement of the Brothers of Charity.

    Philosophy of Day Services.

    1.    Enable all school leavers and their families to choose the most appropriate Day Service option regardless of what agency delivers the service. The role includes information sharing and visiting different services – which ultimately evolves to the construction of a Transition Plan, the end outcome of an inclusive process.
    2.    Advocate for all Adult Service Users to have a full day service whether it be Vocational, Leisure, Activation or Therapeutic in nature.
    3.    Enable / Link / Advocate that all adult service users integrate with their general or local community to their maximum benefit.
    4.    Participate in Service Planning Meetings as an advocate ensuring that such meetings are inclusive in nature and reflect the bottom up approach to service planning.
    5.    Facilitate Self-Advocacy Programmes and in so doing ensure that clients have the necessary skills to give voice to their service issue needs.
    6.    Support service users who are living independently and in open employment through community development model approach.


    In fulfilling the Social Work role in adult residential services various professional roles are adopted by the Social Worker. The roles are very much grounded by the Brothers of Charity Philosophy of Residential Services.

  • Advocate on behalf of service users or enable them to give voice to their residential needs and in so doing ensure that residential service matches the need.

  • Advocate for service users to have maximum level of independence e.g.
    Maximum control over their money
    Included and involved in budgeting
    Choice in leisure options
    Choice of menu
    Choice of clothes to wear

  • Advocate on their behalf or ensure that service users views and wishes are respected when a change of residence is planned.

  • Be an active listening ear to any concern which service users, their family or staff might have in respect of any aspect of the service users residential needs.

  • Attend Service Planning and Review Meetings in the role of an advocate ensuring that such meetings are inclusive and respectful of the clients needs.

  • Link with service users families and advocate to the organisation on their behalf.
