Day Services

Waterford

The Brothers of Charity Services Ireland – South East in Waterford provide a number of day and residential services to adults with intellectual disabilities depending on their support needs, interests and wishes.

The Waterford service is divided into distinct service areas, each offering their own unique programmes to best serve the needs of the individuals using the service.

Currently our services for School Leavers are primarily offered in the following service locations however this is subject to change as new services develop to meet increased demand for places.

START – is a Rehabilitative Training Centre. It focuses on facilitating trainees to make a successful transition from dependence to greater independence and occupational integration. The programme runs for three years and caters for people who have the potential to maximise their independence skills. It aims to provide trainees with skills, knowledge, attitude and experience for a successful progression into part time employment, further education or an alternative day service based on the need of the individual. START also aims to provide trainees with necessary skills to cultivate social gain, skills to achieve the highest possible level of personal health and also self-advocacy skills to empower trainees in negotiating their own development within the community.

QUEST – is a community based transition training centre which aims to equip school leavers with the skills to progress from school to adult services by developing awareness and understanding of their own individual potential using a variety of training approaches. QUEST caters for people who may require a little more encouragement to develop their skill and confidence level, for example, a young person may require a calm and secure environment to which they can transition; they may find confidence and upskill themselves before moving on to START after one or two years.
Some people also decide that they like this steady and supportive pace and do not move at all, happy to be based in QUEST and to grow, develop and to access all community activities from there. Types of activities include, community integration, basic food hygiene and cookery, use of equipment, literacy and numeracy and money skills, technology for living skills, expressive art, life skills, recreational– swimming, horse riding , social outings, alternative and sensory programmes and self-advocacy. The activities can and do change based on the preferences of people supported.

The Blue Door and Compass Services have developed as day services to meet the needs of young adults, particularly those on the autism spectrum. The focus is on skill development, community participation and social activities.
Many of these young people have additional supports and their daily activities are individualised around their interests and skill level. The focus is on offering people new opportunities in a supportive environment while taking account of anxieties around change, however continuing to strive and encourage personal growth for each person.

Cairdeas Day Services, collectively known as Killeen Day Services – cater for individuals who have severe and profound levels of intellectual disability. Some individuals supported also have physical and/or complex needs which require additional supports. People may also require nursing care as part of their day supports. These day services are provided in three locations in Waterford City.
The approach taken is very much of a holistic nature with the focus being on relaxation, craft, art, social outings and community connections.

Others requiring an alternative – We recognise that everyone is different and for example there are some young people who cannot be around others and need their own space/day service; others who do not want to be in a building but require outdoor space and activities; and some who want/need quietness, calmness and a small group of select peers around them.
We will endeavour, funding permitted, to accommodate and provide supports to each person based on their need and preference.

Ballytobin Services
The majority of the residents attend a day service within the grounds of Ballytobin Services, called “The Hub”, whilst another individual avails of an individualised day service, known as “The Den”, within Ballytobin Services. These day services work within the framework and guidance of New Directions promoting individualised activity schedules which encourage participation within the wider community engaging in activities, such as horse riding, swimming, work experience, Men’s Shed, outdoor pursuits within their community and continued education for some. Those who attend day services outside Ballytobin are facilitated to attend their day service. All residents are proactively encouraged to participate in the local community and are therefore provided with opportunities to utilise all services within their community.
