Overview of Supports in Waterford

Brothers of Charity Services Ireland in Waterford provide a range of services to adults with an intellectual disability some of whom may have additional medical, physical and/or sensory needs.

The services in Waterford are divided across five service areas and each service area consists of a number of day services and also residential supports in houses and/or apartments.

The service areas known as Cairdeas Services; Comeragh Services; Nova Services; Parkside Services and Tory Services.

The following is a brief synopsis of each of these service areas and while each service area has a particular skill set, first and foremost and common to all areas is the belief that people who are supported remain at the centre of their lives and supported to be all that they can be.

  • Cairdeas Services is the umbrella name for this service area which consists of day services over four locations in Waterford City and a number of residential houses also located across the city and county.
  • Cairdeas Day Services provide supports for people of all age ranges who have significant and complex medical, physical and sensory needs. They also support an older age group of people who also have more complex needs. There is a high presence of nursing support in some of the locations to ensure the needs of people are met appropriately.
  • Cairdeas Day Services also support young people with complex needs who can present with behaviour that challenges.
  • Cairdeas Residential Services provides supports to residents who access full time residential support across six residences. Residents in these houses have supports from nursing staff which is reflective of their need for same. ed.
  • Cairdeas Residential Service also provide supports in one house on a part time basis to a number of people.
  • Four residential team leaders are in post to support this service.
  • All of the houses under the umbrella of Cairdeas Residential Services are registered and compliant with the HIQA Standards. Cairdeas Services also has the support of a full time manager. Additional supports are provided to people as and if required by psychiatry, psychology, social work and speech and language therapy.

  • Comeragh Services is the umbrella name for this service area which consists of day services over three locations in Waterford City and a number of residential houses also located across the city and county and in South Kilkenny.
  • Comeragh Day Services provide supports in the main, for people in the older age range. However, they also support an individualised day service and a small individualised service for three people with Autism.
  • Comeragh Residential Services provide supports to residents who access full time residential support across eight residences. Two of these residences have nursing supports reflective of the complex needs of people who live here. The remaining houses are supported by social care staff.
  • Comeragh Residential Services also support one person to live in their own home.
  • Three residential team leaders are in post to support this service.
  • All of the houses under the umbrella of Comeragh Residential Services are registered and compliant with the HIQA Standards.
  • Comeragh Services also has the support of a full time manager. Additional supports are provided to people as and if required by psychiatry, psychology, social work, nurse educator and speech and language therapy.

  • Nova Services is the umbrella name for this service area which consists of day services over eight locations in Waterford City and a number of residential houses also located across the city and county.
  • Nova Day Services provide supports in the main, for younger people, ranging from providing RT placements for some who are school leavers to people who may require smaller or individualised services. Supports are provided to young people with autism in four of these locations.
  • Nova Residential Services provide supports to residents who access full time residential support across two settings; one of which is a house and the other is individual apartment style dwellings. Residents in both of these settings are supported by social care staff.
  • A residential team leader is in post to support this service
  • All of the houses under the umbrella of Nova Residential Services are registered and compliant with the HIQA Standards.
  • Nova Services also has the support of a full-time manager. Additional supports are provided to people and staff teams as and if required by psychiatry, psychology, social work and speech and language therapy.

  • Parkside Services is the umbrella name for this service area which consists of day services over two locations, one of which is in Waterford City and one in South Kilkenny. Parkside Services also have a number of residential houses located across Waterford city and county and in South Kilkenny.
  • Parkside Day Services provide supports for people with varying needs, some of whom can present with behaviour which challenges. Parkside Day Services consists of a farm, a wholesale garden centre, training and crafts and a resource centre.
  • Parkside Residential Services provide supports to residents who access full time residential support across five residences. All houses are supported by social care staff.
  • Parkside Residential Services also provide supports to people living independently
  • A residential team leader is in post to support these services.
  • All of the houses providing full time supports under the umbrella of Parkside Residential Services are registered and compliant with the HIQA Standards.
  • Parkside Services has the support of a full-time manager. Additional supports are provided to people and staff teams as and if required by psychiatry, psychology, social work and speech and language therapy.

  • Tory Services is the umbrella name for this service area which consists of day services over seven locations in Waterford City and county and additionally a number of residential houses also located across the city and county.
  • Tory Day Services provide supports for people across a range of ages. In the main, services are provided to people who have a level of independence and interested in building on their own skill level.
  • Tory Residential Services provide supports to residents who access full time residential support across five residences. All houses are supported by social care staff.
  • Tory Residential Services also provide supports to people living independently.
  • A residential team leader is in post to support these services.
  • All of the houses providing full time supports under the umbrella of Tory Services are registered and compliant with the HIQA Standards.
  • Tory Services has the support of a full-time manager. Additional supports are provided to people and staff teams as and if required by psychiatry, psychology, social work, nurse educator and speech and language therapy.

Baile – Supports to people living independently

  • Baile is the umbrella name for this service which is relatively new in its concept and provides small quantities of supports to enable people to live independently in their own accommodation.These supports are provided during the day, evenings and at weekends as people need them.
  • People who avail of this service have the capacity and capability to live independently with a little support.
  • Baile has the support of a full-time coordinator.

Community Involvement

The services in Waterford endeavour to support people to participate in their local communities and to avail of all the opportunities available to them in these communities. This can take the form of joining adult education classes for example literacy, cooking, IT; entering into employment – either paid or in a voluntary capacity; participating in community groups like Tidy Towns, Waterford Walls, SPRAOI, St Patrick’s Day Parades; beach clean ups and The Men’s Shed amongst others. People we support have the opportunity to participate in social farming, gain skills in enterprises which may lead to employment in the open market, join in arts groups, musical groups, participate with the Special Olympics, join in all the fun and frolics with our own recreation department in addition to accessing sports venues across the city and county. We encourage and support people to participate and attend all local events if they so wish.
